Curator Middle East, Asian Department
About
I am the curator responsible for the Arab World collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. I specialise in the Islamic Mediterranean, especially al-Andalus and the Maghrib, but more generally I am interested in material culture connections around the Mediterranean during the medieval period. I am interested in how people commission works of art and what messages they express through these commissions.
I completed my DPhil at the University of Oxford (Oriental Institute) in 2002, supervised by Prof. Jeremy Johns. The title was "Articulating the Hijaba: 'Amirid Artistic and Cultural Patronage in Al-Andalus, circa 970-1010 AD". Later this year I will finally start preparing it for publication, with Edinburgh University Press.
Some of my current research projects:
I am part of the Red Europea de Museos de Arte Islámico (REMAI), an EU-funded project co-ordinated by the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife and partnered by the V&A and the Musée du Louvre. As part of this project I am researching Andalusi lustreware in the V&A collections which were excavated at Fustat in Egypt. The project will conclude with an international conference at the Alhambra in April.
I am interested in the rediscovery of Islamic Spain in the 19th century, and have co-curated an exhibition entitled 'Owen Jones: Islamic Design, Discovery and Vision'. This has just opened at the Museum of Islamic Civilization in Sharjah, having shown at the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo and the Museo de Bellas Artes at the Alhambra.
I am also researching 19th-century plaster casts of Islamic ornament from Cairo and the Alhambra, for the V&A's refurbished Cast Courts.
Later this year I will be giving conference papers on oliphants, the collecting history of the V&A's Andalusi textiles, and the evidence for Amalfitan trade with Umayyad Córdoba.
I will be guest editing an issue of Al-Masaq: Islam and the Medieval Mediterranean, on the theme of material culture connections between Sicily/Italy and North Africa.
